The Things We Leave Unfinished – Rebecca Yarros

“In a blink of an eye, something happens out of nowhere, when you least expect it. And it sets you on a path you never planned. It’s the journey of our lives, our quest for the light. But sometimes, to find the light, you have to go through the deepest darkness.”

Recently, I stumbled upon this quote while scrolling through social media, and it immediately transported me into Rebecca Yarros’s universe. In a visceral narrative about sacrifice and the weight of the past, the author shows us the courage needed to finish stories that others left behind.

Between Now and Then

The story is divided between the present and the past (World War II):

  • In the Present: We meet Georgia Stanton. Amidst a difficult divorce, she returns to her great-grandmother’s home, the famous writer Scarlett Stanton. Georgia takes on the mission of managing her grandmother’s literary estate, which includes an unfinished manuscript — the only story Scarlett never managed to complete.
  • The Main Conflict: To conclude the work, the publisher insists on hiring Noah, an author who enters Georgia’s life intensely. As they both delve into Scarlett’s life and her great love, Jameson (a British pilot during the war), we witness an irresistible chemistry grow between them. Through letters and yellowed pages, we discover an epic and forbidden romance, marked by the uncertainties of war and devastating choices.

Why Read It?

This is a book about legacy. Rebecca Yarros delivers a sensitive story about loss, second chances, and how love can traverse time. It is an incredibly perfect narrative.

The writing is extremely romantic, reinforcing the kind of love we all deserve to experience. It perfectly explores how the traumas and affections of past generations echo in who we are today. It is a reflective read, ideal for anyone looking for a story that makes the heart ache and beat faster all at once.

Prepare a cup of tea, light one of our Estudio Cafuné candles to create a cozy atmosphere, and allow yourself to feel every emotion this story provides. Sometimes, reading about the darkness of others helps us illuminate our own journey.
